About the programme

The objective of a doctoral study programme is the completion of a scientific education in the field of archaeology so that the graduate will be able to perform independently scientific work in the Czech Republic and abroad. Doctoral studies of archaeology follow up on the master's degree level of studies. The foundation of doctoral studies consists in writing a dissertation and completing the compulsory and selected elective courses, which correspond to the basic specialisation of the studies of archaeology at the FA USB, i.e.,
  • 1) Archaeology of Prehistory and Early Middle Ages,
  • 2) Medieval and Postmedieval Archaeology,
  • 3) Environmental Archaeology,
  • and 4) Archaeological Theory and Method.

  • In a joint "School of Doctoral Studies in Archaeology" with the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, under the OPVVV project, the student also has the option of other courses offered by the respective institutes. Great emphasis is placed on independent scientific work, which each student has to complete individually based on intensive contact with the teacher.

  • Programme structure

    The foundation that this doctoral degree programme rests upon is the dissertation and its preparation as well as compulsory and selected elective courses corresponding to the basic specialisations in archaeology available at the faculty:
    1.Archaeology of Prehistory and Early Middle Ages,
    2.Medieval and Postmedieval Archaeology,
    3.Environmental Archaeology,
    4.Archaeological Theory and Method.
    In a joint "School of Doctoral Studies in Archaeology" with the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, students also have the option of selecting other courses. Great emphasis is placed on independent scientific work involving each student having to completed individually upon consultations with their educators.

    Graduate profile

      Graduates will have gained skills and knowledge through education in archaeology at a level comparable to doctoral degree programmes of a similar orientation at other domestic and foreign universities. The aim of the degree programme is to provide a comprehensive education in the field of archaeology so that graduates are capable of independent scientific work in the Czech Republic and abroad. Graduates are mature and professional researchers able to work in the academic sphere and other professional institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad. They will be able to perform independent scientific work both methodologically and theoretically, lead scientific projects independently and lecture at universities. They will also be equipped with sufficient language skills to work at foreign institutions

    Applicants must submit their applications electronically and also send its paper version to the Dean´s Office including all required attachments (the envelope must be marked Admission Procedure).

    Application requirements - The following are the required attachments
    • a detailed curriculum vitae,
    • information on the applicant´s professional experience,
    • a list of publications,
    • a proposition of the PhD project and a bibliography of source materials for the research,
    • an officially certified copy of the master´s degree diploma. (Note: Applicants who are in the process of completing their master´s degree or are awaiting the receipt of their diploma shall submit a copy to the Student Affair´s Office at the USB Faculty of Arts by 27 September 2024 at the latest.)
    Admission interviews
    The interview shall test the applicant´s factual and methodological knowledge in their field of study, explore their understanding of what it means to study at the required level of scholarship as well as the applicant´s motivation, resilience, and ability to work independently. Additionally, the PhD proposal included in their application will be discussed.
