About the programme

The program Biophysics is focused on the scientific work of students in the fields of physics, chemistry and biology. In their PhD projects, biophysics students are primarily concerned with solving problems that fall thematically into biology and / or chemistry, and they solve these problems using physical methods. The offered PhD projects are both theoretical and experimental, and depending on the specific focus they can deal with either basic or applied research. During the solution of PhD projects, students are led to independent scientific work, from the design and implementation of experimental and theoretical approaches, the correct processing and interpretation of measured or calculated data, to the presentation of results. The topics of dissertations are based on the scientific profile of individual professional groups and cover a wide range of modern biophysical methods from ultrafast laser spectroscopy and single molecule spectroscopy through X-ray diffraction analysis, molecular dynamics, quantum chemical and semiempirical calculations, molecular modeling techniques, to advanced microscopic methods including electron microscopy or atomic force microscopy. These methods are applied to the study of biological systems from the level of molecules through the study of isolated proteins, whole cells to the modeling of processes in ecosystems. Dissertation topics include current biophysics and cover a wide range of methods from ultrafast optical spectroscopy through X-ray diffraction analysis, molecular dynamics, quantum chemical and semi-empirical calculations, molecular modeling techniques, advanced microscopic methods, experimental theory and image processing. These methods are applied to the study of biological systems from the level of individual molecules through cells to the modeling of processes in ecosystems. The program is accredited jointly with the Biology Centre of AS CR in České Budějovice and the Institute of Microbiology AS CR in Třeboň

Graduate profile

  • work independently on research projects, but also to work in a research team,
  • present their proposals, process and critically interpret the results and outputs, whether in the form of scientific publication or applied output,
  • orientate oneself in scientific literature, communicate with the scientific community, design experiments and implement appropriate methodologies for them,
  • apply a wide range of spectroscopic and imaging methods for the study of biological and chemical systems.
  • researcher in labs focused on basic research, development and monitoring work,
  • university teacher.

How to apply

Graduates of five-year university programmes from faculties of natural sciences or related fields are eligible to apply for the doctoral (PhD) programme. Prior to applying, candidates must identify a potential supervisor who has proposed a dissertation topic of interest. Additionally, applicants are required to pay the application fee (700 CZK), which can be done via IS STAG when completing the application form.

Application Requirements
Before the admission procedure, the applicant must submit the following documents:
- Completed application form (Application).
- Detailed curriculum vitae (CV).
- Copy of university diploma(s) obtained through an authorized document conversion and details of completed studies (e.g., photocopy of the Statement of Studies or Diploma Supplement).
- Dissertation project proposal, including information about the planned dissertation project, submitted on the prescribed form (Dissertation project). This proposal should be prepared in collaboration with the intended supervisor and will be discussed during the entrance examination.
- Letters of recommendation from academic staff members (other than the intended supervisor), a certified copy of the university diploma(s) (or equivalent documents from a foreign university), and a diploma supplement (or proof of the recognition of the previous master's degree by the Czech authorities).
- A list of published and unpublished papers, including any professional evaluations of these works, as well as other relevant documents such as certificates of completed professional courses, internships, language exam certificates, etc. (optional).

The complete application, including all required documents and payment of the fee, must be submitted by the following deadlines:
- Winter semester: January 20
- Summer semester: May 20
Applications are open in IS STAG from November 1 to January 20, and from February 1 to May 20.

Admission Procedure
The winter term of the admission procedure will take place at the end of January or in the first half of February. The summer term will occur in June (applicants will be informed of the exact date).
Applicants may submit certified copies of their diploma(s) (or corresponding foreign documents, or recognition of the Master's degree by Czech authorities) via postal service to the Department of Student Affairs at the designated address.
In case of deficiencies in the application, applicants must respond promptly and appropriately to any comments within the specified timeframe; failure to do so will result in the termination of the admission process, and the application fee will not be refunded.
The admission committee, appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Science at USB, evaluates applicants' qualifications for scientific or managerial work based on their academic record, diploma thesis, publications, and proposed doctoral study plan. The interview may also include an assessment of English language proficiency. International applicants may conduct their interview via Zoom/Teams on the same date as other applicants.

Final Decision on Admission
Based on available capacity, the Dean will make a decision regarding the applicant?s admission within 30 days of the admission interview.
