FFPW USB Ph.D. student made it to the finals of the Falling Walls competition

The national round of Falling Walls Lab took place on 12th September 2024 at the National Technical Library in Prague. Mandal Bidipta M.Sc., a student of the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters USB and a representative of the Laboratory of Nutrition, Institute of Aquaculture and Protection of Waters, was among the finalists of this year's competition and presented his research on "Breaking the wall of the omega-3 fatty acid crisis". The research focused on the critical need to protect public health in Central Europe by extracting essential fatty acids from Czech ponds or increasing the omega-3 fatty acid content of farmed carp.

This innovative approach could potentially revolutionise the way essential nutrients are obtained and address the growing health problems (heart disease) associated with omega-3 deficiency.

The Falling Walls competition offered the student an invaluable opportunity to engage in discussion with leading scientists, entrepreneurs and industry experts. "Sharing research and networking with like-minded individuals provided me with valuable insights and inspiration for my future endeavors," says Mandal Bidipta.

He also appeals to his fellow young scientists from the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice to take advantage of opportunities such as the Falling Walls competition. "These events not only showcase our work, but also encourage collaboration and innovation. I would like to express my sincere thanks to my professors, Dr. Koushik Roy and Dr. Jan Mraz, for their unwavering support and guidance throughout the process. In addition, I am deeply grateful to my colleague, Tellbüscher Anil Axel, for his invaluable contribution," concludes the Bidipta experience.

The global finals of the Falling Walls Science Summit 2024 will take place on 7th-9th November 2024 in Berlin.
