Twenty-year-old hockey forward Markéta Mazancová was a member of the golden women's hockey team at the 2025 Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy. Although the Czech hockey players went to the tournament with medal ambitions, they surprised not only their opponents but also hockey fans with their sensational victory. In the final on 20 January 2025, they defeated the favoured Canadians 2-1 in extra time. They returned home with gold medals, which is a huge success not only for our country but also for Czech university sport. Two students of the University of South Bohemia also won gold - hockey forward and student of English and Spanish at the Faculty of Arts Markéta Mazancová and goalkeeper and student of combined studies at the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters Barbora Dalecká. While Barbora returned from the winning tournament straight to Canada, where she is based, Markéta brought the gold medal to show our university.
The Rector of USB Pavel Kozák congratulated her on her great success and thanked her for the great representation of the University of South Bohemia and women's hockey at the world level.
We firmly hope that this success is a prelude to the Women's Hockey World Championship in April, which will be hosted by České Budějovice. The University of South Bohemia has agreed with representatives of the International Ice Hockey Federation to cooperate. It will be a great sports festival for České Budějovice, the South Bohemian Region and all hockey fans. We want to have another world hockey medal in the Czech Republic!
