USB Faculty of Economics welcomed shops with fair trade products
On Tuesday, 26 November, the Faculty of Economics held an event "Fairtrade Faculty Day" to support producers from developing countries and local fair production. The event was intended for students and employees of the entire University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice.
Fair&Bio, Pražírna Drahonice and Slunečnice CB accepted the invitation to the event. All these companies offered a very diverse range of products. By meeting together at the Faculty of Economics, they expressed their support for producers from Africa, Asia and Latin America involved in the Fairtrade system. They are then able to grow crops on their farms in an environmentally friendly way, are paid fairly for their work and their children can go to school. In addition, they also receive support from experts who provide training to help them grow more efficiently and more environmentally friendly. Newly, two student teams also participated in the event as vendors. In one case, it was a team that makes natural candles from beeswax, in the other case it was a team that presented and sold a mascot of the Charity of the Czech Republic at the event to support children with cancer.
The event was supported by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, doc. RNDr. Zuzana Dvořáková Líšková, Ph.D., who commented on this important day with the following words: "We have already organised a similar event last year and I was again looking forward to this moment, when we can all support both companies engaged in fair trade and the producers themselves. I think it's important to look after not only ourselves, but also other people in the world and nature."
Sales of most categories of fair trade goods continue to grow in the Czech Republic. Fairtrade surcharge for goods sold in the Czech Republic, i.e. the extra money spent by growers to develop communities and improve the efficiency of growing, rose again last year and amounted to almost CZK 43 million. The biggest contributor, almost 60 percent, was the sale of fairtrade cocoa, of which 4 306 tonnes were sold in the Czech Republic.
