About the programme

The doctoral degree programme focuses on scientific research and independent creative work in the field of modern Czech literature, i.e. literature of the 19th and 20th century as well as its relation to other cultural contexts in Europe or worldwide. Therefore, significant international comparative elements (Anglo-Saxon literature, German literature, and Romance literature). The aim is to prepare young experts who are able to take into account the newest theoretical, literary and historical aspects of the field and to approach them critically.

Programme structure

Studies in the programme are based on an individual study plan and led by a supervisor. Emphasis is placed on the issues of literary-historical methods and on the development of literary thinking, which helps the students in the preparation of their dissertation projects.

Graduate profile

    Graduates of the doctoral degree programme are prepared for independent scientific activities. They are well-versed in contemporary literary and literary-historical thinking and capable of interpreting while using linguistic theories critically. They can develop or innovate these approaches in a creative way, thus contributing to currently discussed issues or questions in the field. Graduate destinations include:
  • independent and team positions at higher education and scientific institutions,
  • specialised positions in publishing, media, or cultural organisations,
  • publishing houses,
  • editorial staff.

Applicants must submit their applications electronically and also send its paper version to the Dean´s Office including all required attachments (the envelope must be marked Admission Procedure).

Application requirements - The following are the required attachments
  • a detailed curriculum vitae,
  • information on the applicant´s professional experience,
  • a list of publications,
  • a proposition of the PhD project and a bibliography of source materials for the research,
  • an officially certified copy of the master´s degree diploma. (Note: Applicants who are in the process of completing their master´s degree or are awaiting the receipt of their diploma shall submit a copy to the Student Affair´s Office at the USB Faculty of Arts by 19 September 2025 at the latest.)
Admission interviews
The interview shall test the applicant´s factual and methodological knowledge in their field of study, explore their understanding of what it means to study at the required level of scholarship as well as the applicant´s motivation, resilience, and ability to work independently. Additionally, the PhD proposal included in their application will be discussed.
