About the programme

The program Biophysics is focused on the scientific work of students in the fields of physics, chemistry and biology. In their PhD projects, biophysics students are primarily concerned with solving problems that fall thematically into biology and / or chemistry, and they solve these problems using physical methods. The offered PhD projects are both theoretical and experimental, and depending on the specific focus they can deal with either basic or applied research. During the solution of PhD projects, students are led to independent scientific work, from the design and implementation of experimental and theoretical approaches, the correct processing and interpretation of measured or calculated data, to the presentation of results. The topics of dissertations are based on the scientific profile of individual professional groups and cover a wide range of modern biophysical methods from ultrafast laser spectroscopy and single molecule spectroscopy through X-ray diffraction analysis, molecular dynamics, quantum chemical and semiempirical calculations, molecular modeling techniques, to advanced microscopic methods including electron microscopy or atomic force microscopy. These methods are applied to the study of biological systems from the level of molecules through the study of isolated proteins, whole cells to the modeling of processes in ecosystems. Dissertation topics include current biophysics and cover a wide range of methods from ultrafast optical spectroscopy through X-ray diffraction analysis, molecular dynamics, quantum chemical and semi-empirical calculations, molecular modeling techniques, advanced microscopic methods, experimental theory and image processing. These methods are applied to the study of biological systems from the level of individual molecules through cells to the modeling of processes in ecosystems. The program is accredited jointly with the Biology Centre of AS CR in České Budějovice and the Institute of Microbiology AS CR in Třeboň

Graduate profile

  • work independently on research projects, but also to work in a research team,
  • present their proposals, process and critically interpret the results and outputs, whether in the form of scientific publication or applied output,
  • orientate oneself in scientific literature, communicate with the scientific community, design experiments and implement appropriate methodologies for them,
  • apply a wide range of spectroscopic and imaging methods for the study of biological and chemical systems.
  • researcher in labs focused on basic research, development and monitoring work,
  • university teacher.

How to apply

Graduates of five-year university studies at faculties of natural sciences or faculties close to their field of study may apply for the PhD programme. Before applying for studies, the candidate will find a potential supervisor who proposed dissertation topics of interest to him/her and will only apply after the supervisor has agreed to supervise the dissertation. He/she must also pay the application fee (700 CZK, payable via IS STAG when filling in the application form).
Before the admission procedure, the applicant must provide evidence of:
- a completed application form (E-Přihláška)
- a copy of the university diploma(s) and details of the studies completed (photocopy of the Statement of Studies or Diploma Supplement).
- Foreign applicants are obliged to attach a recommendation letter from two academic staff members (other than the incoming supervisor) and a certified copy of the University diploma(s) (or equivalent documents from the foreign university) and a diploma supplement (or a document of recognition of previous master's degree by the Czech authorities).
- detailed CV.
- dissertation project proposal, i.e. information about the planned dissertation project on the prescribed form (eng_planned_dissertation_project.doc). The form includes an annotation of the planned dissertation project, which should be prepared in collaboration with the intended supervisor and is discussed at the entrance examination.
The application, including all documents and payment of the fee, must be submitted no later than January 20 in the winter semester. In the summer semester, it must be submitted by 20 May. The application form is available in IS STAG from 1 November to 20 January and from 1 February to 20 May.
The admission procedure takes place before a committee appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Science of USB. The applicant must demonstrate the prerequisites for continuous scientific or demanding management work and prove these by previous study results, a diploma thesis, possible publishing activities and a specific idea of the focus of doctoral studies and doctoral dissertation.
The interview may also include a test of English language skills. International applicants may complete the interview, which will take place on the same date as the interview with other applicants to the programme, via Zoom/Teams.
The winter term of the admission procedure will take place at the end of January or in the first half of February. The summer term of admission will take place in June (applicants will be informed of the exact date).
