About the programme

Programme limnology provides students with education in the issues and methods of contemporary limnology and hydrobiology, focusing primarily on research in lakes, ponds and reservoirs, chemical processes and the conversion of nutrients in production and microbial processes taking place in surface waters. Unlike other Czech universities, we offer full-time postgraduate education thanks to the scientific background, research infrastructure and close cooperation with the Institutes of Hydrobiology or Entomology (Biology Centre CAS) and the Algatech Center in Třeboň (Institute of Microbiology CAS). The assigned dissertations focus on specific sub-issues of basic research of components of aquatic ecosystems, as well as a holistic approach to entire ecosystems, including their river basins, as well as applications applicable in the practical field of water quality management in water management. We solve specific issues by culturing organisms under controlled conditions in simplified model systems or by participating in long-term research on aquatic ecosystems. We place great emphasis on monitoring and experimental approaches, on the ability of graduates to properly plan the organization of sampling and experiments and to evaluate them statistically. The research is based on the application of modern methods and top instrumentation in close cooperation with the institutes of the CAS. The acquired qualification enables our graduates to have a good job in science and research, as well as in the public and private sectors of water companies and organizations.

Graduate profile

  • use the knowledge of current issues and methods of hydrobiology and limnology, focused primarily on research of ecosystems of valley reservoirs and lakes, chemical processes and nutrient transformation, production and microbial processes taking place in surface waters,
