About the programme

The international cross-border joint master level degree program in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science provided in cooperation between the University of South Bohemia (USB) and the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT). The study program is designed for students who want to gain advanced knowledge in a specialized field of computer science, focusing primarily on artificial intelligence, neural networks, data analysis, processing and data management. Students will gain both a deeper theoretical foundations (mathematical principles of artificial intelligence and data analysis) and practical (lab work and internship) skills necessary for practice.
The programme is closely linked to cooperation with the commercial sphere, especially with partners in the region (BOSCH, Engel, BMW and others), where students also have the opportunity to perform a compulsory internship and/or to work on diploma theses. On top of that both universities are equiped with the state of the art AI laboratories to support the study programme.

Programme structure

The base foundation the joint study program lies in the requirement to spend (in presence) at least ONE semester at the partner university. We recommend to do so within the first two semesters with the flexibility choosing to start summer semester @THD or winter semester @USB. The last two semester are divided between obligatory internship and master thesis. We recommend to choose master thesis supervisor as soon as possible and based on the supervisor's home institution to spend the remaining two semesters in that particular country.

Courses included in the study program are dividi into the four main building blocks and module groups:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Data Science
- Internship
- Master Thesis

Graduate profile

  • Graduates of the cross-border joint study programme MAID will acquire specific knowledge, skills and competences in the specialised field of applied informatics - artificial intelligence (machine learning, analysis and prediction methods) and data science (data mining, data analysis or big data processing). Their professional profile predisposes them to analytical thinking and the ability to define requirements in the field of advanced neural networks, machine and deep learning methods, big data analysis and image processing, including aspects of Industry 4.0 and, last but not least, Life Science. Graduates will acquire these skills through a robust knowledge base in key areas of mathematics or computational intelligence, as well as a range of specific skills in analysis and development or advanced data processing, which will then be used during a compulsory internship in pre-selected companies playing a key role in the labour market in the border region.
Graduates of the joint vocationally oriented follow-up cross-border Master's degree programme will receive:
    - Knowledge:Knowledge of applied computer science, advanced knowledge of data processing, database technologies including analysis, design and software development methods including implementation of parallel algorithms. In addition, they will gain superior knowledge of theoretical computer science including neural networks, deep and machine learning, self-organizing systems, big data analysis and processing.
    - Skills: Application of data processing tools and their implementation, functional modeling, application and service development. Advanced skills and abilities to analyze a problem and design a solution based on an exceptional understanding of distributed algorithms, database modeling and software engineering including parallel processing. In addition, graduates will have practical skills to ensure an excellent understanding of machine learning frameworks (PyTorch, Keras, TensorFlow).
    - Competence: complex analysis of system behaviour, excellent orientation in Industry 4.0 implementations including process optimization designs. In addition, the graduate will be able to design analytical models and define use cases for autonomous systems, acting as an advanced developer, analyst or system integrator. He/she will be able to analyse large data collections, develop data-driven prediction models or assess the applicability of different modelling and abstraction techniques.
The profile of the graduate is further developed in a specially designed laboratory to support this programme of study, where a significant part of the work is dedicated to it, especially in the last semester of the submitted curriculum. This compulsory laboratory work should ideally be linked to the student's thesis topic. By analogy, the graduate has extraordinary communication skills in English, including the ability to write scientific papers in this language, which could be an advantage in the event of a decision to pursue doctoral studies at universities not only in the Czech Republic, but especially abroad. In addition, the students will learn about the cultures of the neighbouring countries by completing the study programme, which will be further supported by taking compulsory courses in the national languages of both partners.
Graduates of the programme will be prepared for a career in the following professions:
    - Machine Learning Scientist
    - Software Engineer - AI Specialist
    - System Architect - AI Specialist
    - Software Developer Specialist
    - Software Analyst
    - Data Scientist
    - Business Intelligence (BI) Developer.
