What can you look forward to? ⤵️

The opening ceremony will take place on April 1st at 7:30 PM at the Kotva Cinema. The festival opens with the film Mr. Nobody Against Putin, which provides an insider's view of contemporary Russian society. A young teacher, responsible for recording school events in a small-town school, is forced to film countless patriotic lessons after the invasion of Ukraine begins, becoming an unwitting tool of propaganda. The footage serves as a powerful warning in today’s era of truth denial and provides a surreal experience. After the film, journalist and Russia expert Ondřej Soukup will discuss with Stanislav Tumis from the Department of East European Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University.

At Kotva Cinema, you can also watch the documentary Watch Out, SNG is Falling! with a debate on the current situation in Slovak culture, or the emotional portrait of the Syrian city of Homs, My Memories Are Full of Ghosts, which will be commented on in a discussion by Czech-Syrian doctor Mansour Al Rajab. At Kotva Cinema, you can also see the winning film of the "Czech Joy" competition from the Ji.hlava IDFF, A House with No Exit, which tells the story of the housing crisis for the poorest through the example of one house in Brno. Other screenings at Kotva Cinema will focus on the decline of democracy in Hungary (Democracy Noir) or the important topic of men's mental health in the sensitive and occasionally even humorous film Men Are Silent.

The program also includes stories from Ukraine, Cuba, and Ethiopia, with a particular focus on the Middle East region. On Friday, April 4th, at Žižkárna, you can watch two diverse but impactful films on this topic – the fascinating animated documentary Shades of Iraq and the Oscar-nominated documentary and winner of the Berlinale competition, No Other Land. This urgent and timely look at the Israeli-Palestinian relations on the occupied West Bank will be discussed by journalist and director of the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies at the Metropolitan University in Prague, Břetislav Tureček.

This year’s festival also includes an environmental theme, explored through the perhaps unconventional topic of ecological burials in the documentary Compost Me. Saturday's program at Žižkárna will also feature a Swedish documentary about right-wing extremism on social media, Hack the Hate.

The festival will close on Saturday, April 5th, at Žižkárna with the screening of an American documentary about the ban on abortion in the USA, Zurawski v. Texas. The film convincingly portrays the traumatic consequences of this ban, affecting women from different social classes and cultural backgrounds. Following this emotional and important courtroom drama, journalist Matěj Schneider from Voxpot and the author of the podcast Redneck will join the discussion.

We look forward to seeing you from April 1st to April 5th, 2025!
