DÍA ARGENTINO: We celebrated 100 years of Argentine-Czech diplomatic relations

On Wednesday, 16 October 2024, an event called DÍA ARGENTINO, or Argentine Day, took place at the Faculty of Arts of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Czech-Argentine diplomatic relations. Students of the Faculty of Arts were treated to a lecture and a discussion with representatives of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in the Czech Republic and with representatives of Argentine cinema. The main point of the programme was the opening of the exhibition of diplomatic archives.
The exhibition, prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in cooperation with the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in the Czech Republic, maps 100 years of Czech-Argentine relations. The significance of the Embassy's link with the Faculty of Arts of the Jagiellonian University is evidenced by the fact that České Budějovice is the first city after Prague to exhibit diplomatic archives. The opening ceremony, attended by many distinguished guests, took place on 16 October 2024 in the entrance hall of the FF JU building. At the opening ceremony, speeches were made by H.E. Claudio Javier Rozencwaig, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic in the Czech Republic, prof. Ondřej Pešek, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, doc. Vladimír Žlábek, Vice-Rector for International Relations of the University, and Ana Maria Llois, Vice-Rector of the University of San Martín. The surprise of the opening was an excellent musical performance of the pupils from the Bohuslav Jeremiáš Music School. The exhibition will run until the end of October.

On the same day, H.E. Claudio Javier Rozencwaig, Ambassador of the Republic of Argentina to the Czech Republic, gave a lecture on Argentina's foreign relations, which was a continuation of the lecture series Cátedra argentina, which the Faculty of Arts of the Jagiellonian University in cooperation with the Embassy has been regularly organizing for the past three years. The cultural programme ended with a debate in Spanish on Argentine cinema with a screening of films and short films with the participation of their directors, actors and other filmmakers. Excerpts of Viva Czechia, Canciones eternas, Retrato de un amanecer and La urugaya were screened. Such a format of the event is quite unique and the JUF is extremely pleased that the DÍA ARGENTINO event was followed by the 13th edition of the Argentine Film Festival in Prague.

The USB Faculty of Arts has been cooperating with Argentina since 2012. The Department of Romance Studies of the Faculty of Arts has long been developing educational and scientific activities with the Universidad Nacional de San Martín (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in the field of sociolinguistics, conversational analysis and teaching of Spanish language and literature. "For the second time, our faculty was able to obtain an Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Grant with this university to support academic exchange of students and teachers. The key themes of the cooperation are the promotion of linguistic inclusion and diversity," explained Dr. Markéta Šmídová from the Department of Romance Studies of the Faculty of Arts, "Since 2019 we have also been cooperating with the Universidad de Morón (Buenos Aires, Argentina). An important contribution of the Universidad de Morón is the participation of its law faculty (Escuela Superior de Leyes) in the extension of the LegTerm database of legal terminology, developed by the Department of Romance Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the Jagiellonian University, with the perspective of Argentine law."
