Earth Day – 26 and 27 April 2024

We would like to invite you to Earth Day, which will take place on Friday, 26 April at the Science Campus in České Budějovice. The Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia and the Biology Centre of the CAS would like to invite you to join the experts on a botanical-entomological walk to the Vrbenské Ponds on Saturday morning, 27 April.

SWAP – CLOTHES AND PLANTS

Do you have clothes or shoes at home that are fine but no longer fit? Do you have plants at home that you are looking for a new home? Or are you looking for a new piece for your wardrobe or a plant friend? Come join us for our SWAP, a free clothing, shoe and plant swap (you can just bring or only take something, max one bag).

FLOWER COLOURING PAGES

Orchid, rose, tulip?  You won't find such plants in our colouring books. But have you ever coloured a picture of a field wood-rush and a little hop clover? Then you can with us.  Or come and paint your favourite flower and decorate the pavement.

THERMAL IMAGING AND ITS APPLICATIONS

Which materials contribute most to the heat island effect of a city and which materials reduce the effect? What about surface temperatures in nature and in the built environment? Come and experience how thermal imaging and aerial/satellite imagery are used to study heat in cities.

A VISION THROUGH TERMOVISION – lecture

A lecture on how thermal imaging works and where it can be used, especially in the natural sciences. Examples will include applications of detecting changes in forest health in the thermal spectrum and others.

DRINKING WATER FROM A TAP OR BOTTLE

Water is important to our planet and to life, so much so that in some parts of the world it is fought over. But do you know what water actually is? What are the advantages and disadvantages of drinking tap and bottled water? How does it all relate to sustainability and conservation? Does it make sense to address the issue of deposit returns and why does it upset some people so much? Find out all about this in this workshop.

THE ECOLOGY OF THE AQUATIC SYSTEM IN RELATION TO THE FISH COMMUNITY

In an interactive way, you will learn about the functioning of aquatic ecosystems using the example of healthy communities and communities negatively affected by human activities. Examples will include still and flowing waters with typical fish communities.

BIRD GAMES

Birds share the city and the landscape with us. Come and see how much you know about them and learn something new in a fun way.

ZEROWASTE

Do you have environmental grief about the amount of garbage that is flooding our planet? Come and learn about the zero-waste concept, which advises how not to produce waste. We will advise you on how to make small changes in your life that will help the planet.

DDM – UPCYCLING WORKSHOP

Give old things a chance and come and make something new out of them, like a bracelet, a headband or a toy for your dog.

INTRODUCTION OF STURGEON-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS

Did you know that caviar can also be obtained gently? The Faculty of Fisheries and Water Protection knows how. Come and see a presentation of sturgeon-friendly caviar products.

INSECT NIGHT

Evening insect observation on the light trap with experts from the Biology Centre of the CAS. Come with us to observe night butterflies and everything else that flies after the light. The Insect Night is organized by the Biology Centre of the CAS as part of the CITY NATURE CHALLENGE, the world's largest urban nature monitoring event. Join in and document nature in your neighbourhood!

The event will take place on Friday, April 26th from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the pond on the grounds of the BC CAS. Free admission.

IN SEARCH OF PLANTS AND INSECTS AT VRBENSKÉ PONDS

Botanical-entomological excursion led by experts from the Biology Centre of the CAS and the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency. The excursion is organized by the Biology Centre of the CAS as part of the world's largest urban nature monitoring CITY NATURE CHALLENGE. Join us and document nature in your neighbourhood!

With entomologist Ales Bezdek (BC CAS) we will observe butterflies, beetles living in old wood, dragonfly larvae and other aquatic insects.

Together with botanist Jitka Štěrbová (NLPA) we will explore the jungle between Mladohaklovský and Velký Vávrovský pond and maybe we will also find the carnivorous bladderwort.

Suitable off-road footwear, the walk will also take place off paved roads.

The event takes place weather permitting on Saturday, April 27 from 9:00 to 12:00. Meet at the heat exchanger at Máj.
