On 12 September, the Falling Walls Lab Czech Republic 2023 took place at the National Library of Technology (NTK) in Prague. Falling Walls is the unique global hub connecting science, business and society that shapes the future of humanity through impact-oriented ideas and discoveries driven by shared dedication to creating breakthroughs across borders and disciplines.

The Falling Walls Lab Czech Republic was organised by NTK in cooperation with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Prague and the German Academic Exchange Service. A multitude of talks from researchers and entrepreneurs all over the Czech Republic, covering fields such as medicine, parasitology, water treatment, quantum chemistry, psychology and many more were presented. Each candidate had three minutes to convince the jury and the audience of their groundbreaking ideas on how to bring about a more positive future.

The University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice was represented by two candidates: Miriama Pekl’anská from the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Anil Axel Tellbüscher from the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters. And it was Anil Tellbüscher, a second-year Ph.D. student working in the field of aquaculture waste valorisation who secured victory. His talk entitled ‘Breaking the Wall of Aquaculture Waste’ convinced the jury and was awarded EUR 1000 sponsored by xitee k.s. Anil will go on to represent USB and the Czech Republic at the Falling Walls World Finals in Berlin.

The first Falling Walls Conference was held in 2009 the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The crumbling blocks of the Berlin Wall that marked the dawn of a new era of freedom by physical and imaginary breaking barriers inspired and continue to inspire the mission of the Falling Walls Foundation in bringing together those who set out to tear down the next walls in science and society. Today, it has become an ever-growing network of the most ambitious and forward-thinking minds from around the globe who stand for the freedom of thought, scientific research and making ground-breaking ideas accessible to society.
