Kateřina Sam from the Department of Zoology, USB Faculty of Science, received the L'Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science

In the 18th year of the prestigious L'Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science programme, the jury was most impressed by three experts in the fields of physics and microbial and systems ecology. The programme focuses on supporting talented women scientists at the start of their research careers and aims to recognise the work they do perfectly despite the challenging conditions women often face in the scientific environment.

The winners of the 18th year of the L'Oréal UNESCO Talent Programme for Women in Science are:

Mgr. Kateřina Kopalová, Ph.D., focuses on freshwater diatoms, a group of algae from the Antarctic region that form the basis of local food webs. Her studies contribute to a greater understanding of microbial ecology, evolution and, in the context of the climate change crisis, the distribution and biodiversity of these organisms.

Ing. Monika Kučeráková, Ph.D., specialises in the analysis of single crystals, i.e. complex materials consisting of several tens to hundreds of atoms.

Mgr. Kateřina Sam, Ph.D., (FSC USB) focuses on the interaction between insectivorous predators and prey and the subsequent impact of their relationships on ecosystems. She conducts experiments not only in the laboratory, but also in the field in various places around the world.
