The University of South Bohemia will commemorate one year since the tragic shooting at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University with a silent memorial
Students and employees of the University of South Bohemia will silently remember the victims of last December's shooting at the Faculty of Arts in Prague. A memorial site, where people can bring a candle or a flower, will be located on the campus of the University of South Bohemia in front of the Rectorate from Friday 20 December. The University is not planning any speeches, it will be a silent remembrance and tribute to the victims.
By commemorating the tragedy in which 14 people were shot and 25 injured by a student at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University on 21 December last year, the University of South Bohemia wants to re-emphasise the values of solidarity, mutual tolerance and respect that should be honoured and promoted in an academic environment. At the same time, it wants to take this opportunity to highlight the theme of resilience, i.e. the need to develop resilience among students to live in an uncertain world.
Last year's tragedy also highlighted the need to strengthen security in academic institutions. In this regard, the University of South Bohemia has extended the university's application to include crisis reporting in addition to the existing security measures. Every student, academic and now also every employee of the University of South Bohemia can set up an alert on the StuduJU university app to notify them of any emergency security situation in all areas of the University of South Bohemia.
"This feature is intended to contribute to targeted strengthening of security in all USB buildings. Everyone who is in any premises of our university can now set where and how they want to be alerted to a dangerous situation or sudden event. By doing so, we want to provide our students and staff with another way to feel safer at USB, in an easy and quick way, by using crisis notifications on their mobile phones. Our goal is to take measures that do not restrict the essence of free life at an open University," explains the USB Rector Pavel Kozák.
Crisis notifications thus reinforced the measures already in place in the form of security of entrances, training of employees and permanent cooperation with the Regional Police Directorate of the South Bohemian Region. The University of South Bohemia also provides students with university psychological counselling and supports student involvement in student associations and university life.
